Picramnia pentandra

Florida bitterbush, an evergreen shrub or small tree to about 20 ft. with yellowish-brown bark. In the United States it is restricted to hammocks in Miami-Dade County, with a wider native range through the Bahamas, Greater and Lesser Antilles, and northern South America. Leaves are alternate and pinnately compound with 5–9 leathery, entire leaflets, pale beneath. Plants are dioecious; both sexes bear minute greenish flowers tinged red on long drooping spikes, and female plants set small round fruits that ripen red then black and are dispersed by birds. Grows in filtered light on well-drained limestone soils. Listed as Endangered by the State of Florida.
