A small, solitary understory palm native to Vanuatu and the Santa Cruz Islands. Stems are slender, to about 2–4 m tall and 6–12 cm in diameter, marked with closely spaced leaf scars. Leaves are nearly circular, costapalmate and strongly plicate, usually entire with only a shallow apical notch; blades are ~0.8–1.2 m across on petioles to ~1–1.5 m long with marginal spines. Inflorescences are interfoliar and lightly branched, bearing small, pale flowers. Fruits are globose, 1-1.5 cm in diameter, ripening bright red. A slow-growing, shade-tolerant species of lowland wet forest, widely cultivated as the ruffled fan palm.
