This clustering, fan-leaved species grows in various regions, including Egypt, Sudan, and West Africa, as well as parts of East Africa such as Kenya and Tanzania. The 30-foot-long stems cluster from its base and can branch above ground. Petioles are heavily armed, and fruits mature to a rich brown color. The genus is dioecious, with male and female plants producing distinct reproductive structures.
