Native to New Guinea and the adjacent Moluccas islands, its suckering stem grows to 25 ft. and is covered with long black fibers. It has massive leaves 12 ft. long x 5 ft. wide and 6 ft. long petioles. For the most part, leaflets are evenly arranged along its 8 ft. long rachis, but near the base they are clustering and inserted at different angles. Like many Arenga, the leaflets are silvery beneath with jagged tips. Its flowers are purple and fragrant. Its attractive fruits are red and the palm grows well and moderately fast in full sun or partial shade.
